Gorgeous Glencoe Ranch Remodel

Glencoe1
This article in today's Chicago Tribune caught my eye. It illustrates perfectly why there is no need to raze the wonderful examples of mid-century modern in Chicagoland. These homes are open, bright and so livable,  often sited on gorgeous properties. They require only buyers with some vision and the right people to bring that vision to life. A big round of applause to homeowner Kathy Doyle and architect Steven Suski for their renovation of this Glencoe modernist ranch, and to Shaila Wunderlich for her article. Please see the link below for full text.

Mid-Century Glencoe Split-Level

P_0_07155207.JPEG
I spotted a great looking house in the MLS a few days ago. Located in Glencoe, this big, open split-level house has some really nice features; high cathedral ceilings in the living/dining room, lower level den with huge fireplace that opens out to a gorgeous in-ground pool- perfect for summer parties. 5 bedrooms and 3 baths mean there's lots of room for everyone.Give me a call soon to see it.

P_1219896054840_P8250238
This stunning mid-century modern residence was designed and built in 1960 by Jack Viks, a student of Mies van der Rohe. A minimalist glass and brick pavilion sited on 2.09 secluded, wooded  acres in Lake Forest. Two adjoining lots, .92 acres each, are included for a total of almost 4 acres. The asking price of this wonderful home has been reduced to $1,8000,000 from $2,290,000. The property includes a guest house and an in-ground pool, along with parking for up to 8 vehicles. The 2 lots are also available separately. Restoration will be very rewarding.  Live with nature in a work of art.

The first weekend of November brings 2 fantastic events to Chicagoland for those of us who are lovers of all things modern.

The SOFA (Sculpture, Objects and Functional Art) 2008 Fair comes to Navy Pier Nov. 7-9. This is the 15th year for this comprehensive show of contemporary art from the Chicago  area and all around the world. In addition to seeing wonderful works and meeting artists and craftsmen, you can find out about local galleries, hear lectures, see demonstrations, and view films.

The 19th annual Winnetka Modernism Show, held at the Winnetka Community House, runs Nov. 8 & 9 with a Gala Preview Party  Friday Nov. 7th. This show features quality examples of everything from furniture to decorative arts to clothing dating from the the early to late 20th Century, including Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Arts & Crafts Moderne, and Mid-Century. Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond has participated for several years, and we meet all kinds of fellow enthusiasts. Please stop by our booth and say hello.

Great Autumn Architecture Tours

I just read in the Chicago Tribune that the Farnsworth House will be offering tours of the flood damaged Mies masterpiece. These special tours are going to run only through the end of October and will offer a rare (and heart- wrenching) look at the recent damage.  The proceeds from these tours will help with the extremely costly restoration.

Also, Wright's Robie House in Hyde Park is set to undergo a comprehensive restoration project starting in fall of 2009. In preparation for this , the tour schedule will be cut back from 7 days a week to Saturdays only beginning Nov. 1, 2008 until closing to the public Oct. 31, 2009. Go see the ultimate Prairie House while you can.
